Part 4-Pain Management OKC

Pain Management OKC Reveals 5 Myths About Chronic Pain: Part 4

Pain Management OKC And Unraveling Chronic Pain

In part one, part two, and part three of this blog series over the month of August, our pain management OKC team has provided a total of 3 out of 5 myths about chronic pain. Today, we’re revealing the last blog with the final two myths listed below, in hopes that outsiders looking in on a chronic pain sufferer may see these people in a new light.

Chronic Pain Myth #4: If it’s undiagnosed, then the pain must not be real.

People suffering from chronic pain often battle with the pain for years without a diagnosis. Most patients with chronic pain have tried various types of treatment methods to no avail. It can become a discouragement to try to explain what the pain feels like to someone who has no idea. Family, friends, and coworkers, often combat with statements of skepticism.

The Truth: Seeing isn’t believing, despite what many people argue. Just because a specific pain hasn’t been categorized, given a name, or simply hasn’t been diagnosed, doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Chronic pain is complex, and it requires specialized doctors (like those at our pain management OKC treatment centers) to properly diagnose.

Chronic Pain Myth #5: All chronic pain sufferers just want to abuse opioids.

The use of opioids (a class of drugs that produce morphine-like effects) is a common treatment for chronic pain, but it is not the only option. Too often, chronic pain sufferers are presented with very few pain management options and that’s when they resort to medication or surgery for relief. Of course, medication only alleviates pain and discomfort temporarily. It doesn’t actually target the root of the pain. Surgery can be more long-term, but in some cases it takes multiple surgeries before relief comes.

The Truth: There are so many interventional pain management OKC treatments that don’t involve surgery or medication. With the proper treatment, people with chronic pain can experience pain relief without the side effects or risks of overdosing on medication.

At Oklahoma Pain Treatment Centers, our pain management OKC specialists are passionate about innovative pain management treatment with interventional therapies. To schedule a consultation with our specialized doctors, contact us today at 405-751-0011.

Part 3-Pain Management OKC

Pain Management OKC Reveals 5 Myths About Chronic Pain: Part 3

Pain Management OKC And Unraveling Chronic Pain

In part one and part two of this blog series, our pain management OKC team has revealed a total of 2 out of 5 myths surrounding chronic pain and the thoughts people often have about those suffering from something no one can see on the outside. Today, we’re going to reveal the third most common myth.

Chronic Pain Myth #3: Making healthier choices will cure chronic pain.

It’s easy to become swept up in the belief that exercising will be a miracle cure for you if you suffer from chronic pain, but this is not the case. There are many circumstances where exercising too strenuously can actually cause more problems. There are also several, gentle alternative therapies like yoga, massage therapy, and incorporating an anti-inflammatory diet. Unfortunately, while these methods can help, they don’t actually get to the root problem.

The Truth: It’s important to consult with someone like our pain management OKC doctor to find the proper treatment plan, which often times starts with a proper diagnosis. Chronic pain can often be caused by a car accident injury, auto-immune disease, aging, and other medical conditions. It’s important to determine where the problem started in order to better treat the pain. Remember, while a healthy lifestyle won’t make matters worse, it is unlikely that it will cure your pain.

Part 2-Pain Management OKC

Pain Management OKC Reveals 5 Myths About Chronic Pain: Part 2

Pain Management OKC And Unraveling Chronic Pain

In the first part of this blog series our pain management OKC team provided 1 out of 5 myths that outsiders often have when viewing a person suffering from chronic pain. Often, pain management OKC patients come to us seeking answers with no outwardly visible signs. Today, we’re going one step further to discuss the second most common myth about chronic pain.

Chronic Pain Myth #2: Chronic pain is a normal sign of aging.

As we age, it is true that the joints and muscles in the body can develop persistent aches and pains. Sometimes our pain management OKC patients experience chronic pain, but they don’t even realize it, because they mistake it as normal aging pains. More often than not, chronic pain is caused by injuries, nerve damage, or a variety of medical conditions.

The Truth: Chronic pain statistics, based on a study conducted by the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, show that 100 million people who suffer from chronic pain are Americans! Elderly adults aren’t the only ones suffering. In fact, further studies indicate that many of the people with chronic pain are between the ages of 18 and 59 years old.

It’s also stated that 7% of persistent lower back pain cases develop into chronic pain. If you begin to experience ongoing pain, don’t just assume that it is part of the aging process.

Part 1-Pain Management OKC

Pain Management OKC Reveals 5 Myths About Chronic Pain: Part 1

Pain Management OKC And Unraveling Chronic Pain

To an outsider looking in on someone who suffers from chronic pain, it is often a difficult thing to understand. It’s not always the same for everyone as there are many different causes and symptoms of chronic pain. Furthermore, it is difficult to diagnose, because it could be many other problems. Often, pain management OKC patients come to us seeking answers with no outwardly visible signs.

With that being said, it’s not something someone suffering with chronic pain would call invisible by any means. Most chronic pain sufferers have most likely been lumped into one of the stereotypes that surround those with this type of condition. To give perspective to people who have never experienced chronic pain, our pain management OKC team is reviewing 5 of the most common pain myths.

Over the course of the next few blogs we’ll break down these myths.

Chronic Pain Myth #1: People with chronic pain are lazy.

At times, pain can be so intense that it forces chronic pain sufferers to sit out of activities they would normally enjoy doing. Unfortunately, people often perceive this time of much needed rest and recuperation as laziness or that the patient is just making up excuses to get out of responsibilities.

Truth: Chronic pain is overwhelming! Even with the help of pain management OKC therapy, medication, and treatments, chronic pain comes with good days and bad days. While physical therapy and forms of gentle exercise (swimming, yoga, stretches, etc.) can be beneficial, it is so important to listen to your body when you are in pain. People with chronic pain typically exert more energy to complete simple daily tasks others take for granted. Chronic pain sufferers must learn to respect their own limitations and capabilities out of necessity, not laziness.

Joint injections may be able to offer more relief than without them for patients suffering from chronic pain. Our pain management OKC team is here to help at Oklahoma Pain Treatment Centers. To book an appointment with our pain management OKC specialists, please give us a call at 405-751-0011.
